The A95L produces an impressive picture, with accurate colors and deep contrast. It has plenty of power to take advantage of Sony’s image processing and to run Google TV quickly. It’s packed with features, including a camera. But it’s expensive.

If you can find it in your budget to make the leap, the Sony A95L will dazzle your senses for years to come. Its jaw-dropping picture represents the best money can buy, but unfortunately, you’ll have to spend a great deal of it to indulge. The next best TV in the QD-OLED class, the Samsung S95C, is roughly $800 to $1,200 cheaper, depending on size.

Our initial expectations for Sony A95L anticipated a TV more or less identical to last year's Sony A95K. Consequently, the +40% boost in brightness came as a pleasant surprise and combined with its excellent color reproduction and gradient handling, A95L distinguishes itself from the TV that received our Reference Award last year. Despite incremental improvements, we hereby declare A95L as the benchmark TV against which we evaluate future TVs, giving it our Reference Award.

Looking and sounding tremendous, and loaded with surprisingly useful features and extras, the Sony Bravia XR A95L is one of the best-performing and most forward-thinking OLED TVs on the market. But its approach to brightness may give some pause.

The Sony BRAVIA A95L is a fantastic TV for any usage. It looks great in a bright room thanks to its high peak brightness and fantastic reflection handling. Like all OLED TVs, it's also superb for watching in a dark room thanks to its perfect inky blacks and nearly infinite contrast ratio. This also makes it an incredible TV for watching movies in HDR, as bright highlights stand out incredibly well, even in bright scenes. Finally, it's an exceptionally good TV for gaming thanks to its super low input lag, crystal-clear motion, and a wide array of gaming features like VRR and 4k @ 120Hz Dolby Vision gaming.

The A95L is not just a worthy successor to the already impressive A95K—it sets a new standard altogether. It excels in virtually every area, from its stunning picture quality and robust sound system to its myriad of smart and gaming features. Its performance across multiple viewing and usage scenarios is consistent and impressive, making it an easy recommendation for anyone in search of a high-quality TV. Given its superior all-around capabilities, I personally believe it's the best TV available this year. With its advanced technology and unrivaled performance, it's no wonder the A95L is raising the bar for what we can expect from TVs in the future. As such, it more than earns its designation as an AVS Top Choice for 2023.

The A95L has the full benefits of second-generation QD OLED with its stunning colour volume and decent image uniformity, added to what Sony does best with image upscaling, motion and video processing which adds up to one of the very best OLED TVs of 2023. There is no such thing as the perfect TV and that is certainly true here with some areas slightly lacking compared to its peers when it comes to gaming and only offering two HDMI 2.1 ports with eARC on one of those. Plus, this is a very expensive TV when compared to the LG G3 and Samsung S95C as all of these TVs are very close to each other in terms of picture quality. But with that said, Sony continues to push forward the QD OLED case and does so with stunning image quality, motion reproduction and image processing and is clearly a Best in Class performer.
