Technics Unveils SL-1200GR2 and SL-1210GR2: Elevating Vinyl Playback with Digital Precision

Technics, the iconic Japanese audio brand, has announced its latest turntable offerings: the SL-1200GR2 and its black variant, the SL-1210GR2. These second-generation models are set to redefine vinyl playback with their commitment to smoother and more accurate platter rotation. The key to this innovation lies in a new motor system that harnesses digital technology to deliver optimal performance.

Delta Sigma Drive: Precision in Rotation

Technics has adopted a groundbreaking approach to enhance platter rotation accuracy. The new motor system employs a digital amplifier to convert a digital PWM signal into an analog signal, which then generates the sine wave responsible for turning the platter. This high-precision 1-bit D/A conversion, known as ΔΣ-Drive (Delta Sigma Drive), is integral to Technics' full-digital amplifiers, featuring the proprietary JENO Engine technology.

Delta Sigma Drive ensures the creation of a perfect sine wave, effectively minimizing motor vibrations. This precision represents a substantial leap forward compared to older analog RF oscillator-based systems from the 1970s. Even the motor control introduced with the 2016 revival of the Technics SL-1200 turntable was based on PWM for D/A conversion, using a microcontroller with a sine-wave ROM. While it significantly improved rotational precision, it still fell short of perfection. With Delta Sigma Drive, Technics aims to deliver 100% accuracy.

Advanced Power Supply

To complement the Delta Sigma Drive, the SL-1200GR2 and SL-1210GR2 feature a multi-stage switching power supply that operates at over 100kHz. Unwanted noise is meticulously canceled out using a noise-canceling circuit borrowed from Technics' reference SL-1000R turntable. This process mirrors the technology found in active noise-canceling headphones, where detected noise signals are inverted and reintroduced into the circuit.

Retained Innovations

While the GR2 models introduce groundbreaking technology, they also retain some key design elements that have made Technics turntables legendary. These include:

  1. Twin-Layered Bottom Chassis: A combination of BMC (Bulk Moulding Compound) and aluminum provides exceptional vibration resistance.

  2. Twin-Layered Platter: The aluminum platter structure is dampened with heavyweight rubber.

  3. S-Bend Aluminum Tonearm: Featuring a detachable headshell for convenience.

  4. Quad of Insulating and Height-Adjustable Feet: Ensures optimal stability and isolation.

Enhanced Design

The SL-1200GR2/SL-1210GR2 features improved color coordination and matching components for a sleeker overall design. Additionally, the packaging has been upgraded, replacing styrofoam with shaped cardboard.

Pricing and Availability

The SL-1200GR2/SL-1210GR2 turntables are priced at US$2199/€1999, representing a premium over the first-generation models. Shipping is expected to commence in December.

Technics has a rich history of pioneering turntable technology, and the SL-1200GR2 and SL-1210GR2 are set to continue this tradition. These turntables are poised to deliver an unparalleled vinyl listening experience, combining precision, innovation, and legendary craftsmanship.
