Comfortable and sturdy, the Audio-Technica ATH-G1 makes for a solid gaming headset – and it isn’t half bad for music, either. However, its relatively high asking price might make it a hard sell.

The Audio-technica ATH-G1 comes from a highly established audio company and as such offers great stereo sound in a compact and comfortable form factor. But there is no software to alter the output, and no option for surround sound either.

Audio-Technica’s flagship-level gaming headset is frustratingly close to unbridled awesomeness. It sounds wonderful. It’s light and comfortable. Its design is relatively unique, and it combines smart weight reduction with a robust feel in the hand. The microphone is a master class in how a headset microphone should sound, making it a great choice for just about any application.

The Audio Technica ATH-G1 gaming headset is a passive offering, seldom impressing in the context of its overblown asking price. That isn't to say it's bad – it simply pales in comparison to its rivals in most areas. The overall design lacks a punch, and the unfortunate absence of any customisable audio profiles and robust build quality prevent it from being anything but acceptable.

The Audio-Technica ATH-G1 mimics the design of the company's other famed headphones. It reproduces brilliantly clear audio even with heavy bass emphasis. Gamers who want a comfortable pair of headphones that won't make their ears too hot will enjoy these.
