The Bowers & Wilkins PI7 are impressive. Even if the price of just under 400 euros seems high at first, the first True Wireless in-ears from the long-established English manufacturer are worth the money. The sound raises the bar for their competitors and revises (my) prejudice that TWS earphones are not good enough for pure music enjoyment. What was also pleasing was the option of audio streaming via USB as well as mini-jack cable. So the PI7s offer wireless listening from the TV and can be used as playback devices for on-board systems on planes and trains, and even media creators could get used to incorporating True Wireless headphones into their work process thanks to the USB streaming function. A convincing debut in the true-wireless market!
The sound quality is outstanding, the looks and styling are beautiful, and the special features including the ability to stream audio from televisions and other devices is an absolute game changer. I can see these headphones being a must have for a lot of folks, simply for that media streaming ability alone. When they find out the PI7 are also amazing sounding, multiple charging options, noise cancellation and pass-through, and they’re comfortable, they’ll be wowed as I was.
The fact that the Bowers & Wilkins PI7, with their sky-high price-tag, a control app that’s more style than substance, an incomplete suite of touch controls, and humdrum active noise-cancelling and battery life, must sound incredible to come this close to a five-star review. That’s because they offer a truly enjoyable listening experience, and with a charging case that doubles as an audio retransmitter, they’re a genuinely unique pair of wireless earbuds.
These true wireless in-ears are a class-leader in audio performance - if you're willing to pay the weighty price ticket. They don't come with the best active noise-cancelling (ANC) out there, but it's still very good and backed up by truly awesome sonics. The wireless charging case is neat too, with Bluetooth transmission, so you can use it to connect a wired source to your headphones. A great debut in the field from Bowers & Wilkins.
If you listen to high-quality tracks If you’re a subscriber to the likes of Tidal and Primephonic, and enjoy the convenience of true wireless over full-sized headphones, then the PI7 fit the bill. The audio quality is fantastic with the right quality to hand.
They out-perform their nearest rivals in many if not all aspects. They look fantastic, they sound superb and they have the innovative audio transmission feature which means you can use them to stream from all kinds of sources. The price tag may be an issue for some enthusiasts and there’s no way of getting around this. There are links on our site to cheaper options, of course, but here we are in the realms of true luxury products and that has to be taken into consideration. We’re sure you won’t have cause to regret the investment.
Overall, the Bowers & Wilkins PI7 wireless earphones accomplish a lot of what it sets out to do. It is comfortable for extended wear, has good detail and a large soundstage which are tough to do in a closed in-ear, and the transmitter case is a novel option.
As I’ve said in other reviews, I am not an audiophile, so take my thoughts here with a grain of salt. For a compact, inner earbud, these guys put out some beautiful sound. Especially when you get the inner ear fit just right, the lows are plentiful and the mids/highs are clear. Honestly, when you have a bass-heavy song going, you can even feel the earbuds vibrate. It is pretty fun and cool.
There's a lot of promise in this design, but in order to compete, B&W will need to drastically improve its noise cancellation chops and work on stabilizing that Bluetooth connection. Or failing that, just chop the price down dramatically. I look forward to seeing further efforts from the company along these lines.
The B&W PI7 are wireless earbuds that are capable of playing high-resolution audio files up to 24-bit/48 kHz, which are some of the highest resolution audio files that you can stream over Bluetooth. But your phone might not be able to handle it.
With aptX Adaptive support and a unique retransmitting charging case, the Bowers & Wilkins PI7 makes its case for the best Bluetooth audio quality in a pair of wireless earbuds. However, these earbuds cost an arm and a leg, and don't hold up to the competition when it comes to customization, sound quality, active noise cancelling (ANC), or battery life.
The Bowers & Wilkins PI7 true wireless earphones deliver high-fidelity audio and high-quality noise cancellation in a luxurious package with a price to match.
Bottom line: Bowers & Wilkins stays true to its reputation by delivering superb sound with the PI7 earbuds, putting them on the same pedestal as others doing the same. The case plays a dual role that is super useful, but the rest of the overall package forces compromises you have to be cool with.
While vocals and lead instruments are present and detailed, their sound profile is still very bass-heavy, which adds extra thump, rumble, and boom to your mixes. Some users may find this to sound muddy. Their passive soundstage also seems closed-off and as if coming from inside your head, rather than from speakers placed around the room around you, which is to be expected from their in-ear design.
So, to the million-dollar (£350) question: should you buy the Bowers & Wilkins PI7? They’re the best-sounding noise-cancelling earbuds I’ve tested and although their ANC isn’t class-leading, it’s not far off. They also look great, fit comfortably (for me at least) and are well protected against dust and water.
Bowers & Wilkins PI7 are a true wireless masterpiece, with some fantastic extra features. But the design of the earbud may be an issue for smaller ears.
