The Cambridge Audio Melomania P100 are punching far above their weight class and they’re landing solid punches. If you’re looking for similar headphones from Sennheiser, Bose, Sony, Master & Dynamic, Bang & Olufsen, or Apple. Consider the Cambridge Audio Melomania P100.

The Cambridge Audio Melomania P100 set a new benchmark in wireless ANC headphones. Not only do they sound superb, thanks to those custom drivers and the Class AB amplification, but the ANC function is in the major league and you also get great comfort and almost endless battery life in a design that’s sustainable for years to come. Considering the P100 are Cambridge Audio’s first pair of true wireless ANC headphones, the company has scored a bullseye with a product that offers incredible value for money and probably ought to cost a lot more. If you are thinking of buying Sony or Bose ANC headphones, do yourself a favor and listen to the Melomania P100 first. You won’t regret it. Highly recommended.

Turn the volume up a little, and you'll be treated to spacious, energetic, and punchy sound from the Melomania P100. The noise-cancelling could be a little more consistent, but in terms of its all-round performance, this is a strong mid-range effort from Cambridge Audio.

It remains. On the one hand, the new P100 is my benchmark for future test candidates. On the other hand, it fulfills all the values that I value: fine, balanced and easy to play. Plus perfect noise-canceling and a finish that is as elegant as it is practical. Bose, Sony, Bowers? I’m not interested, not anymore. At best, the current Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless can keep up. They are brothers in spirit. But Sennheiser has been a bank for decades. It’s astonishing that Cambridge Audio is making such a strong impact with its first over-ear headphones.

Ultimately, it’s all rather predictable. Cambridge Audio, as confident as they come, identifies an area of the consumer electronics market it would like to be involved in, develops and delivers an appropriate product - and that product turns out to be a superbly specified device that’s profoundly enjoyable to listen to. Chalk up another one in the Cambridge Audio ‘positive’ column…

The P100 is a genuinely engaging and well engineered headphone that gets an awful lot right. It shares virtues we've seen on other products from the company and the keen pricing makes it something of a bargain.

However, the P100 is not without its faults. On the one hand, the workmanship seems a little wobbly and fragile, while on the other, the wearing comfort is not entirely convincing. People with larger ears in particular are not well served here. However, this is a personal matter: I find the P100 quite comfortable. So if you’re looking for over-ear headphones with impressive sound at a powerful price, the Cambridge Audio Melomania P100 are an excellent choice.

I'm a big fan of how the Cambridge Audio Melomania P100 feel and sound when you have them on. But I'm less keen on how they look on me. These aren't best suited to travel either because of how chunky they are.

Cambridge Audio's first set of over-ears marks an accomplished start – the Melomania P100 is priced really competitively. But that's not to the compromise of sound quality – as these over-ears also sound great. There's superb battery life, too. The only real downside is that there's room for improvement in comfort compared to some of the myriad competition.

It’s not as if you’re short of choice where wireless, active noise-cancelling over-ear headphones selling for between $250 / £200 / AU$390 and $350 / £300 / AU$590 are concerned. But you can, and honestly should, add this aggressively priced, lavishly specified and great-sounding new pair to your shortlist…
