For $3,499, the Formovie Theater is ideal if you seek the highest image quality in this Ultra-Short-Throw projector class. The Formovie Theater's video and audio feature sets are the most comprehensive I've seen at this price point. The images this Ultra-Short-Throw projector produces are beautiful in dark rooms and rooms where users don't have total control over ambient light sources. As you can see in the pictures below, the images the Formovie displays on the screen look great!
The Formovie Theater, which was the surprise winner of the Triple Laser category of the ProjectorCentral 2022 Laser TV Showdown, is a full featured ultra-short throw Laser TV projector that has a lot to offer at a very reasonable price point.
The FORMOVIE THEATHER UST LASER PROJECTOR is priced competitively with its peers but delivers better contrast and a larger color gamut with excellent built-in audio. It’s a winner for sure.
In the end this little unit throws an incredible, contrast-y image with great colors when calibrated, while also looking pretty amazing out of the box in a brighter living room. For the approximate $3,000 outlay, I dare say there’s no better performer overall in this price range and projector class!
Overall I have had an absolute blast reviewing Formovie's Theater. It's set at a tough ask, but the value proposition is, as far as I can tell, unmatched. I have a 55-inch TCL TV that I can't look at the same ever again. There's just nothing quite like the Theater, as it really brings the cinema to your living space.
The Image Quality you get is fantastic, it's pretty stunning when you're there looking at an image that is projected up to what I'm looking at here almost a hundred and well 40 inches. Can go up to 150 and it still looks very good.
My time spent with the Formovie Theater was a bit up and down. Calibration was a bit of a battle, but viewing was a joy. I really enjoyed the expanded color compared to most projectors on the market, even though it was lacking in color brightness. I love the fluidity, motion, and sharpness that DLP brings to the table. Add to that the contrast this ALPD 4.0 equipped projector delivers and we’re left with a very high performing projector for the price.
Overall, our time with the Formovie Theater 4K projector has been great. The UST projector is built well and offers a fantastic media experience utilizing Android TV. The picture is great and is packed into a nice piece of hardware that’s basically silent and unassuming.
The $3,000 Formovie Theater offers features and image quality not found in any other UST projector even remotely in this price range. With a triple-laser engine and Dolby Vision, it delivers a bright picture, high contrast and accurate colors. And if you’re not quite satisfied with the picture right out of the box, there are a wide range of controls to adjust and calibrate it.
It will offers an excellent all-around experience in a light-controlled room. Just don't forget to get a decent quality screen if you are planning to also use it in daytime with ambient light around.
That about sums up my experience with the Formovie Theater: rough around the edges. The product hits some high notes but largely feels unfinished. There are other 4K UST projectors from heavy hitters like LG and Samsung at or below this price point, and they don't have these small quibbles hindering them. Perhaps the biggest threat to the Formovie Theater is from rival Xgimi. The Aura has almost everything the Theater has, albeit with smaller color coverage and a larger shell. However, it's US$500 cheaper than the Theater ($1000 cheaper with a coupon available at the time of writing), and I don't think the advantages the Theater has warrant the increased cost.
If you are looking for an Ultra Short Throw projector solution rather than a big-screen TV, then the Formovie Theater is a compelling product with a number of features to highlight. Its triple-colour laser light source means you will get consistent light output over the lifetime of the unit as well as decent brightness for varied use cases. It supports Dolby Vision which does help to get the best out of those sources in the DV Dark mode, but HDR10 content is also supported. The main issue is the lack of overall dynamic range given this is a projector, but if you are looking at a UST solution you are already aware of this shortcoming with the technology.
It's one of the few projectors at all that are available to give you Dolby Vision, if that's one of your must-have features. The triple laser means you get huge images and still have great brightness—it's awe-inspiring.
The Formovie THEATER is decent for watching movies. It's bright enough to look good in dim rooms but not bright enough to handle moderately lit rooms. Its contrast is great, however, so content looks deep and punchy when the lights are off, so close the blinds and turn off the lights for maximum impact. It has a wide color gamut, but unfortunately, it's not bright enough to make them pop. The projector's color accuracy is inadequate out-of-the-box, with magentas looking too red and cyans leaning strongly toward green. You'll have to invest in a calibrator if you care about color accuracy.
