But the clincher is the sound. Listening with the H190 was an absolute pleasure, and it drew out qualities in recordings I’d previously overlooked. I’d certainly want to own one, and recommend it highly to anyone looking for a powerful, network-capable integrated amplifier. The H190 is just one more example of a revelation I’ve had with Hegel.

The Hegel H190 needs a loudspeaker with smooth treble and good bass extension, but the fact that it has so much control over the low end makes the range of options wider than average. The treble could be a bit sweeter, but there’s no denying the appeal of the dynamics and timing that it can deliver, and the built-in DAC and streamer make it rather good value. Three analogue inputs may not be sufficient for everyone, but with more and more digital sources, I suspect that Hegel has got the balance right on the connectivity front, Bluetooth notwithstanding. I almost forgot the remote, which is a peach, all metal with buttons that give a click and let you know what the display will be telling you; it’s the icing on a cake. Strongly recommended!

If you are in doubt that investing carefully in the right amplifier can really make a real difference to your listening experience then you need to think again. For context, I was comparing the H190 to my Michell Argo HR preamplifier and Alecto “top hat” monos – no slouches! The H190 took my set up to the next level and then some, with that trademark grip driving the Amphions (and Fynes) with effortless ease and control. The detail and separation are universal in everything played and paired with, and the on-board DAC has continued to impress me with its punch, clarity and refinement, though it is not overly clinical or dry. Pairing with the Amphions has added a superb balance of deep yet controlled bass and emotion to the detail and transparency that the Hegel offers. Some users with multiple analogue needs may feel the balance of inputs leads towards digital sources, but for most there will be more than enough on offer and control is easy via the solid remote, with the streaming connectivity offering many a one-box solution. I am at a rare point of contentment with my setup and can’t see me changing this amp for a very long time – if ever!

Boasting both superb tonality and abundance of energy, undoubtedly the solidly-built H190 sets a new standard in its class. Hegel has a habit of doing this, and has pulled it off again. We have to acknowledge its neutral timbre, incredible resolution, and phenomenal bass control. The only downside is that all this technology has seen a price increase over its predecessor, not helped by exchange rates.

Hegel's H190 is a versatile integrated amplifier that offers a wide range of connection options, catering to both traditional analogue audio and today's digital and streaming needs. While it doesn't have advanced signal processing features like EQ or room correction, it's an excellent all-in-one solution for most users. The amplifier is compatible with most types of speakers, from studio monitors to standmount designs, delivering a strong performance without any concerns about power output.

Hegel H190 is a very capable amplifier with a capable digital section. And as far as the old-way brands are valued, it is a very good value too. On the other hand, if you turn to lesser know brands, you could find a combination of separates that can easily triumph it sonically. However, those usually don’t come with the bragging rights that big brand names like Hegel bring if that’s something you care about. The choice is yours.

There is yet another step up to reach the insane power, tranquility and elegance of Hegel’s most expensive amplifier sets P30 and H30, and the more expensive set gives more of everything at lower volume. But what makes me happy is how the speakers (regardless of the type) are allowed to determine the sound characteristic. H190 powers everything so to speak. Thus, you can safely buy the most expensive speakers you can afford and operate them with the Hegel H190. In fact, that seems more reasonable to me, than paying less for the speakers so that you can buy a more expensive amplifier. H190 sets a new standard in this price range, compared to everything else we have heard.
