Aside from the aforementioned nits I could pick with the remote (which, if I’m honest, are mostly old-man problems), my only significant beef with the Model 40n is that I wish its edge-lighting could be brightened a bit more. Even on its brightest setting, the lighting accents are barely visible in my pitch-black cave of a listening room.

Marantz's Model 40n proved to be an absolute winner, delivering a rich feature set and outstanding performance at a bargain price. Perfectly enjoyable in stock form, it also provides a myriad of upgrade paths if and when you are ready to take things further. Surely destined to bring joy to its owners, the only headache that it's going to deliver is to rival manufacturers.

Marantz Model 40n Integrated Stereo Amplifier is positioned in the mid to high-end range in Marantz’s product line. The “all-in-one” feature configuration, including DLNA, streaming playback, and HEOS multi-room transmission, as well as app control, is sufficient to appeal general public who love music, have high requirements for music appreciation, but may not be willing to spend time and effort on a complicated system. All you need is an extra pair of speakers and a continuous source of music.

The Marantz Model 40n is a thoroughly modern music streaming machine that sounds great and delivers a robust set of features without losing sight of the brand’s storied past.

Looking back at the press presentation of the Marantz Model 40n, there was a suggestion that I missed at the time, though it's obvious enough in retrospect. This new "Network Integrated Amplifier" isn't meant to be stacked with other components in an audio shrine. It is meant to be placed anywhere you want to enjoy music. It incorporates everything needed for playback from any source; just supply speakers and cables. In a sense (and I mean this with no condescension), it is a music appliance more than an audio component. The 40n is this century's answer to the AM/FM stereo receiver of the previous one.

The integrated Marantz Model 40n lacks the MC input of the Model 30, but beyond that there’s not a lot to be desired. It simply plays great on all music and has a lovely warm sound that you’ll be captivated by. And addictive. With a full house on the streaming front and digital inputs – including HDMI – all you need to do is find a good pair of speakers and you’ve got a system for life.
