Roku isn’t lacking for streaming options, but if you’re after an affordable 4K HDR option then there’s little reason not to give consideration to the Express 4K. With pretty much all the big popular apps supported, along with HDR10+ and Atmos support, plus a slick 4K streaming performance, it’s the best 4K streamer under £50.
The Roku Express 4K is an ideal streamer for anyone wanting to make a TV smart, especially if you have a 4K HDR one that doesn't have all the services you want already, or if you'd rather move to one single platform for everything.
The Roku Express 4K Plus is a bulkier, cheaper version of the streaming stick, but it offers an Ethernet connection — if you don’t mind paying extra for a USB adaptor.
The Roku Express 4K+ drops a few features to hit its $39.99 (around £28, AU$50) sticker price, but even without Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos passthrough it's a rock-solid budget streaming device.
If you’re looking for a capable, easy-to-use streaming device on a tight budget, the Roku Express 4K+ is an excellent option. In fact, if you simply want the cheapest streaming device you can get, this is the one I would go for in 2021—the standard Roku Express is fine, but it’s worth avoiding anything that doesn’t support 4K resolution.
Those who have been afraid to dip their toes into the world of 4K streaming because of price concerns need look no further than Roku's solid entry-level option.
Admittedly, we struggled to find anything negative to say about the Express 4K+. At $40, it’s definitely punching above its weight. The only faults we can find with the little streaming device are a lack of Dolby features, and the fact that it doesn’t come with Roku’s Voice Remote Pro — a new remote that features a rechargeable battery and a feature to help you find a lost remote. Yes, we’re nitpicking, but that’s what happens when a company develops a product like the Express 4K+.
How much you'll enjoy many of Roku's bigger features on the Express 4K+ hangs on which third-party services you subscribe to. HDR10+ support is great, if you have a compatible TV, and are a customer of a streaming provider with HDR10+ content. Availability of Instant Resume and in-app voice search is much the same.
