I have used the word smooth more than a few times describing the sound of this amplifier. This is an honest observation. And yet inner detail and clarity are all there. Bass is deep and impactful. Soundstage depth and width are excellent. Tonal balance and clarity are effortless yet relaxed. It sounds smooth, but doesn't mask bad recordings. All the audiophile performance traits are there. But did I feel at times transients could be a bit sharper. Yes, but I was having too much fun listening to the music to worry. Yet the best way I found to describe the sound of this integrated amplifier is that it sounds smooth, musical, and detailed. I have heard smooth and musical solid-state amplifiers before, but they usually come off as trying to replicate the sound of a tube amp. They are usually expensive, and end up sounding colored. I don't know what kind of alchemy the engineers at Rotel are putting into the Michi line, but whatever it is it is working quite well. This integrated amplifier drew me into the music from the get-go, and never let me go. This integrated amplifier is the best I have ever heard at just making you forget what you are doing and draw you into the music for a long listen.

he Michi X3 is not exactly cheap at $4999, but in my honest opinion, it is worth every penny and more. The components used and the craftmanship of the X3 can beat some of the more expensive products out there. Moreover, it delivers awesome sonic performance that begs to be compared with the best in its class. For these reasons, I consider the X3 one of the best bargains in audio. It is one of the best modern integrated amplifiers that I have ever encountered, and it easily earns my highest recommendation.

As noted earlier, the Rotel arrived here with me having little real idea of what it was going to be like. The sound quality has been covered already but it’s worth noting that the other thing that has come across in its time on test is not sonic but it is almost as perceivable as the audio performance. This is an amp that has been designed from the outset to be something that shows what Rotel is capable of when it feels like it. Every aspect of the design and specification is a carefully considered triangulation of what else is available and to produce an amplifier that stands comparison to any of them.

Combining 'drive anything' confidence with speed, warmth and the ability to switch from pile-driver to a gossamer touch when required, the Michi X3 carries its massive power lightly, and is all the more rewarding as a result. Add in its flexibility, build quality and sheer style, and you have an amp able to take on the burgeoning ranks of super-integrateds and show most of them a clean pair of heels.

With so much power at its disposal, it won’t come as a surprise to learn that the Michi X3 can play piledriver when it’s called upon. But power is nothing without control and finesse and it’s here that it earns its stripes. While speed, agility and warmth are among this integrated’s attributes, what really impresses here is its gossamer-fine lightness of touch. Suddenly all that power is thrown into sharp relief, becoming more rewarding in the process. Throw in a deft mix of top-notch build quality, flexibility and supreme styling, and you’d be forgiven for thinking that Michi might just be here to stay this time around.

We all have different tastes and likes but I am here to say that the X3 is a fantastic integrated amp that still has me not wanting to send it back even though I have some mighty impressive amplification here already. It’s a beauty in looks, sound and build. It brings music forth in a human kind of way. This amp is all about the spirit and soul of the recordings vs the showmanship. If that sounds like it speaks to you, an audition of the X3 may be in order.

An easy amplifier to recommend thanks to its excellent build and broad spread of sonic talents

It would appear to be quite obvious that I loved this integrated amplifier. The Michi X3 carries its tremendous power lightly, which gives it all the more feeling of musical satisfaction. It combines a ‘drive anything’ confidence with speed, smooth warmth, airiness, and spectacular sound standard with the flexibility to transform and deliver all genres of music to an iridescent touch when required.

The fact that the Rotel Michi X3 is the smallest amplifier under the Michi umbrella does not mean that it is small. It is both large, heavy and wonderfully capable. With 2 x 200 watts in 8 ohms and a full 350 watts in 4 ohms, it’s capable of driving whatever you want. And it does so with grace when the music demands it, and the purest rawness when it is dictated.
