Its features are comparable to QN90B, but when it comes to brightness and color, it can’t compete. Especially considering the high level of black. If you’re not in the mood for a Samsung-branded TV, then other high-end options like the LG G2 can be explored. And yet Samsung QN85B is a very good TV. It is bright, colorful and has many new generation features. It has all the trappings of a second-tier luxury TV, but the low black depth holds back its consumer potential.
Thanks to its high peak brightness and good viewing angle, it's an impressive TV for watching TV shows or sports in a bright room. It also has decent contrast and a great local dimming feature, so it's a very good choice for watching movies in either SDR or HDR in a dark room. It also has a quick response time, low input lag, and a great selection of gaming features that help it deliver a great gaming experience overall.
For the money, the Samsung QE55QN85B is quite full-on in terms of specification – and it’s got some real positives to the way it performs, too. But it seems the areas in which it excels and the areas in which it’s deficient are both the result of the same technology. So perhaps Mini LED isn’t the cure-all it’s cracked up to be. At least not when it’s implemented within definite budgetary constraints…
In many ways the QN85B represents excellent value for money, but it’s also a little compromised in certain aspects of its performance. If you want ultra-bright images it'll certainly dazzle your eyeballs for mostly good reasons though.
‘Strange’ is hardly the most positive way to describe a new TV, but that’s the first word that springs to mind here. In some ways the QE55QN85B is an excellent television – its peak brightness, its colour volume, its empathy with next-gen consoles and its attractiveness as an object are all alluring. But it basically can’t do anything with black tones, its screen is reflective, it’s had its Smart TV experience chopped off at the knees… it’s strange, all right.
The Samsung QN85B is a brilliantly accomplished TV in so many ways for movies and gaming, but it lacks the across-the-board excellence of its best rivals at the same price, such as the LG C2.
