With models overlaying the total spectrum from consumer to professional audio to audiophile, the HD 400 PRO headphones represent the most recent flagship model within the Sennheiser Professional sequence.
The Sennheiser HD 400 Pro is also an appealing choice due to its price point. Studio headphones can be expensive. Many times the added investment is worth it but there is a fine line between performance and price.
These are excellent reference headphones for mixing and mastering and also for tracking with the aforementioned caveat about leakage. They’re supremely comfortable and offer an astonishing level of clarity and separation, especially considering their reasonable pricing. Closed-back models might offer more bass and a punchier overall sound but not the accuracy on offer here. If you’re serious about production, not to mention just enjoying listening to recorded music at its best, they’re a definite contender for your money.
The Sennheiser HD 400 Pro are open, circumaural headphones that impressed us with an unagitated, warm sound. They are also comfortable to wear and easy to handle. However, if you are expecting an analytical sounding tool, you will not necessarily find what you are looking for here, despite the detailed sound. The warm sound signature of the Sennheiser headphones is simply too pronounced for that. However, just like the relatively simple package and plain appearance, this should not obscure the fact that we are dealing with headphones that are a good choice for editing, mixing and mastering with their very wide frequency response. The advantage is that all frequency ranges are equally represented with plenty of definition. The Sennheiser HD 400 Pro is therefore a pleasant-to-handle tool for anyone who wants to work with an unobtrusively differentiated sound.
For open?backed headphones, in fact, the HD 400 Pros are aggressively priced, undercutting potential rivals such as the Audio?Technica ATH?R70x, Austrian Audio Hi?X65 and Shure SRH1440, and going more or less directly up against the Beyerdynamic DT900 Pro X.
