Still, if fantastic sound quality is your jam, the Momentum 2 trump them all. Sennheiser’s latest true wireless earbuds are once again the top choice for those who are looking for sound first. And with modern features and better battery life, they offer plenty of other reasons to take the ride now, too.
The sound quality, battery life, and design of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 are nothing short of excellent, and we would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone looking for an alternative to the Sony WF-1000XM3. Those with smaller ears may find them a little uncomfortable, however, and their high price stops them from taking the top spot of the best true wireless earbuds of 2020.
Sennheiser's Momentum True Wireless 2 are definitely an improvement over last year's model. They're slightly smaller and have better battery life, and ANC does a solid job of reducing ambient noise. The company's handy app is back, and it allows you to customize everything from touch controls to the EQ. Thankfully, annoyances like touch controls on the previous version now perform more reliably. The MTW2 is an excellent set of true wireless earbuds, but when options with nearly identical features are available for much less, the nearly $300 price is hard to justify, even if the sound quality is stellar. It's clear that the competition has caught up to Sony though, and true wireless earbuds like the MTW2 are evidence of that. Of course, Sony still has the advantage in terms of price.
My review time with the Momentum True Wireless 2 coincided with a little global phenomenon known as COVID-19, meaning I was spending a LOT of time at home on work calls, watching video content, and of course – listening to music. I expected them to be convenient and competent sounding, but I didn’t expect to be as surprised as I was with how addictive they are. They feel a bit like lying on a warm pillow of sound, and one that you can take, well, anywhere with you. The Momentum became an invaluable work productivity and entertainment companion, and soon enough a go-to music source in their own right.
The fit is more ergonomic, the battery life is infinitely longer and the technical design flaws have finally been fixed. The sound is the same, but the Momentum sound signature needed no improvement. And I appreciate the fact that Sennheiser has resisted the temptation to raise the price point from the first model. So, I can safely say that I think they have redeemed themselves.
Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 also offer many features that people expect from a premium product like that, such as noise-cancellation and Transparent Hearing. Both of them work great, especially the latter.
With a little tweaking, you can end up with a pair of true wireless earbuds that sound great, feature excellent noise-canceling performance, have improved battery life, and are also fairly easy to control. They’re expensive compared to most of their true wireless competition, but I think they just about justify it, even if it won’t make them a top pick for everybody.
The Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 is a pricey pair of earbuds, but with rich sound, active noise-cancelling and great design, you won’t regret what you spend.
They sound fantastic, particularly if you are a fan of clean, controlled and highly detailed sound. They last a long time between charges, have a solid set of gesture controls including volume adjustment, and have rock-solid Bluetooth connectivity with support for SBC, AAC and aptX.
If you're willing to dump out the wallet for the best, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 2 make a strong case for your dollar. Good ANC, sound, and sweat resistance make for a compelling set of true wireless earphones if you're serious about sound. However, that price tag is quite high.
They lack low-bass, and their treble is veiled and dull. However, their mid-range is fairly well-balanced, and if you want to tweak the sound, the companion app has a graphic EQ plus some presets. Their in-ear design helps them deliver sound very consistently across users, but also means they can't produce a wide or spacious soundstage.
While ANC on the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2 is rather light, paired with a good fit and volume control and they keep away a good deal of noise. The real star is the audio quality: expressive, lush and enjoyable.
