Sony’s A80J offers some of the best picture quality you will find in a TV and is bested only by TVs that cost many times as much. It’s also one of the most user-friendly TVs you can buy thanks to its Google TV platform and its impeccable out-of-box picture preset options. It also happens to sound excellent, too. All told, the A80J is a wonderful package, and I highly recommend it.
The stunning design, beautiful quality picture, and a snappy interface make the Sony A80J one of the best OLED displays for gaming and movies you can buy.
We do think LG's C1 is a better overall buy when factoring in smart TV performance, gaming features, and typical selling price — but the A80J is the OLED champ for picture performance.
The Sony A80J takes content at any resolution and makes it look great, its motion skills are class-leading and its HDR performance boasts plenty of detail, contrast and expressive colours
It also offers good connectivity and features for gaming, but does slightly lack the flexibility of the competing LG C1 in that regard, plus the out of the box Filmmaker Mode is more accurate on the LG compared to the cyan looking Custom mode on the A80J, but in all other respects, the Sony competes on a level playing field, with slightly better colour accuracy and tone mapping compared to its peers.
It's fantastic for watching movies in dark rooms because it has a near-infinite contrast ratio that produces deep blacks, and there's no blooming around bright objects. HDR content looks amazing because of its deep blacks, and it displays a wide color gamut, but its HDR brightness is just okay. It's also excellent for watching sports due to its near-instantaneous response time, and it's fantastic for gaming as it has HDMI 2.1 inputs. It's impressive to use as a PC monitor, but you risk damaging the screen with burn-in after exposure to static elements.

The Sony A80J is a cracking mid-range TV that delivers impressive pictures, great sound and a solid set of features. The design is smart and the Google TV platform even smarter, with a responsive and intuitive interface, a customisable layout, and all the main streaming apps. The remote is effective, and there’s a decent set of connections, although including only two HDMI 2.1 inputs feels a little stingy on Sony's part. But that moan aside, the gaming performance is impressive and the input lag low.

The Sony Bravia XR A80J’s many forward-thinking features result in a TV that make it as good-looking and -sounding as it is convenient and fun to use.

Sony's premium OLED TV ticks a lot of the right boxes but still comes up a little short when compared to LG's offerings.

It’s almost as good as the awesome A90J and a whole lot more affordable, and that makes the Sony A80J / A84J an absolutely brilliant buy
