The Sony X90J offers nearly everything we’d want from a mid-range 4K LED-LCD TV. For the money, there are few LED-LCD TVs that can match it in terms of picture quality and feature set, making it top of its class for mid-range models. You also get two HDMI ports with 4K/120Hz support, but it has some issues with screen glare.
Sony's X90J delivers on the promise of its predecessor by addressing many of its issues, with the inclusion of HDMI 2.1 support and a brand new processor making it a good option for next-gen gamers and videophiles.
Ultimately, the Sony Bravia XR X90J represents terrific value, offering a high level of performance for an upper mid-range 55-inch UHD LED TV. Its Cognitive XR processor-powered picture performance is excellent, and it looks beautiful with both HDR games and movies, while its audio reaches higher and goes wider than many rivals. We also like the new Google TV smart platform, and dedicated PlayStation 5 auto optimisation modes. The set only really falls short when it comes to basic catch-up TV amenities.
Its color performance has improved which I believe has a lot to do with its XR TRILUMINOS Pro technology. It’s also HDMI 2.1 compliant and has a built-in tuner for ATSC 3.0 for over-the-air 4K broadcast. On the downside, VRR and ALLM gaming features are not enabled but coming with a future firmware update.
The X90J has a better picture than last year's commendable X900H, and while the X90J didn't perform quite as well as the TCL 6-Series, the two were very close in my side-by-side comparisons. The Sony is bright with great contrast for both standard and HDR content, and while it doesn't match the punch of the TCL or the Hisense 65U8G -- both of which cost less -- it's still an excellent performer.
It's best suited for watching movies and HDR content due to its high contrast ratio, great full-array local dimming, and high HDR brightness. It has low input lag, a fast response time, VRR support, and a 120Hz refresh rate, making it a great choice for gaming. It's good for watching TV shows or sports because it upscales lower resolution content well and gets very bright to combat glare, but its narrow viewing angles make it less ideal for watching with a big group of people.

As for picture quality, X90J is very similar to last year's Sony X900H (XH90). It is not an upgrade but it is still a value-for-money LCD TV with 4K resolution, decent contrast, accurate colors, and a great video processor. On the other hand it has narrow viewing angles and a limited zone dimming system (only 32 zones in the 65-inch X90J) that sets clear limitations for HDR. You get 550-800 nits peak brightness (but not where it matters most) and heavy blooming.
While there’s a price to pay for it during very dark scenes, the 50-inch X90J’s intense brightness and vibrant colours make it an outstanding mid-range option
