Barco Acquires Focal and Naim Parent VerVent Audio in €135M Deal

Barco has announced plans to acquire VerVent Audio Holding, the parent company behind premium audio brands Focal and Naim, in a move that signals a deeper push into the high-end audiovisual market. The Belgian technology company has reached an agreement in principle to purchase 100% of VerVent for an enterprise value of approximately €135 million, positioning itself as a more complete provider of integrated image and sound solutions.

For Barco, a company best known for professional cinema projection, visualization technology, and large-scale display systems, the acquisition represents a strategic expansion beyond visual technologies into high-end audio. If completed, the deal will bring two of the most respected names in the audiophile world under Barco’s Entertainment division.

While consolidation in the audio industry has become increasingly common, this particular move highlights a broader trend: companies are racing to control more of the total entertainment experience, from picture to sound.

A Strategic Push Into Integrated AV

Barco’s leadership has been clear about the company’s direction. CEO An Steegen described the acquisition as a key step in the company’s long-term strategy to build fully integrated audiovisual ecosystems.

“Today marks an important step in Barco’s ambition to shape the future of immersive audiovisual experiences,” Steegen said. “By welcoming VerVent and its iconic Focal and Naim brands into the Barco family, we accelerate our strategy to deliver fully integrated solutions where image and sound reinforce each other seamlessly.”

Barco already holds a strong position in professional cinema projection and visualization technologies, including laser cinema projectors widely used in movie theaters around the world. By adding high-end audio brands like Focal and Naim to its portfolio, the company moves closer to controlling both sides of the audiovisual equation.

This could open the door to fully integrated solutions across several markets, including:

  • High-end residential home theater

  • Professional cinema installations

  • Commercial AV environments

  • Luxury hospitality and public spaces

The acquisition would place VerVent inside Barco’s Entertainment division, which generated roughly €466.8 million in revenue in 2025 and continues to grow as demand for immersive audiovisual experiences increases.

Who Is VerVent Audio?

Headquartered in Saint-Étienne, France, VerVent Audio Holding operates a portfolio of premium audio brands with deep roots in the audiophile and luxury audio markets.

Its two flagship brands are:

Focal
Founded in France in 1979, Focal is widely respected for its high-end loudspeakers, headphones, and studio monitors, as well as its growing presence in automotive audio partnerships with brands such as Bentley and Mercedes-Benz.

Naim Audio
Based in the United Kingdom, Naim is known for premium amplifiers, streaming components, and integrated audio systems, particularly in the high-end two-channel audio market.

Together, the companies span a wide range of categories including:

  • High-end loudspeakers

  • Premium headphones

  • Studio monitors

  • Automotive audio systems

  • Yachting and luxury installations

  • Custom installation and home theater solutions

VerVent also operates a global distribution network, including more than 80 branded retail boutiques and thousands of sales points worldwide.

A Growing Trend of Industry Consolidation

Barco’s acquisition of VerVent is part of a broader wave of consolidation across the premium audio industry over the past several years. Several notable deals have reshaped the market recently:

Recent Audio Industry Acquisitions

Year Acquisition Companies Involved
2025 Harman aquires Sound United Denon, Marantz, Bowers & Wilkins
2024 Bose acquires McIntosh Group McIntosh, Sonus Faber
2026 Sony acquires Audeze Audeze
2022 Sonova acquires Sennheiser Consumer Division Sennheiser headphones

These moves highlight a growing interest from larger technology companies in acquiring established audio brands with strong reputations and loyal followings. Rather than building audio expertise from scratch, companies are choosing to acquire heritage brands and integrate them into larger ecosystems.

From an industry perspective, this is often a sign of strength rather than weakness. Premium audio remains a growing category, supported by trends like:

  • High-end home theater adoption

  • Immersive audio formats

  • Active speaker systems

  • Streaming-based hi-fi systems

  • Luxury residential installations

What Does This Mean for Consumers?

At least in the short term, the answer is likely: not much. In most acquisitions like this, brands such as Focal and Naim continue operating largely independently, maintaining their design teams, engineering philosophies, and product roadmaps.

Barco has indicated it intends to support VerVent’s current strategic plan, which includes:

  • Maintaining its premium audio positioning

  • Expanding digital and connected audio products

  • Strengthening its retail and distribution network

  • Developing more active and integrated audio solutions

For existing customers and dealers, the brands should continue operating as normal. However, the longer-term impact will become clearer over the next few years.

Could We See Focal and Naim Move Further Into Pro AV?

One interesting question is whether this acquisition could expand the presence of Focal and Naim in professional audiovisual environments.

Barco already has a massive footprint in:

  • Professional cinema

  • Control rooms

  • corporate AV installations

  • immersive experience spaces

Adding high-end audio could allow Barco to build more complete AV solutions, pairing its projection technology with premium sound systems. It’s not difficult to imagine future installations where Barco projection systems are paired with Focal professional speakers or immersive audio solutions in cinemas, luxury venues, or commercial installations. While Focal already has a presence in professional studio monitors, the Barco connection could expand that reach into new categories.

The Bigger Picture for the AV Industry

As someone who follows both home theater and two-channel audio, I see this as a positive sign for the industry overall. Premium audio brands have historically operated independently, often with limited resources compared to larger technology companies.

Being backed by a larger organization can provide:

  • More R&D investment

  • Stronger global distribution

  • Greater marketing reach

  • Access to new markets

Of course, there’s always a balance to maintain. Audiophile brands succeed because of their heritage, engineering philosophy, and loyal communities. If those elements remain intact, acquisitions like this can help brands grow without losing their identity.

Looking Ahead

The deal is still subject to regulatory approvals and employee consultations before it can officially close. Once completed, VerVent will become part of Barco’s Entertainment division. For now, consumers should expect business as usual for both Focal and Naim. The real story will unfold over the next several years as we see how the companies integrate and whether new opportunities emerge across professional AV, home theater, and luxury audio. If the strategy works, the acquisition could strengthen both companies while expanding the possibilities for immersive audiovisual experiences. And for those of us who love great sound systems and home theater setups, that’s an exciting prospect.
