Marantz has unveiled its first foray into wireless speakers – the Horizon and Grand Horizon. These speakers combine elegance with exceptional sound quality, targeting audiophiles who desire a premium single-unit solution.
Design and Build
Both models boast a captivating circular design, wrapped in a unique fabric crafted from recycled ocean plastics. This fabric not only promotes sustainability but also enhances the 360-degree sound dispersion.
The Horizon measures 14.33 inches in diameter and 8.27 inches deep, while the Grand Horizon is larger at 19.41 inches in diameter and 10.83 inches deep. Both models exude luxury with a built-in marble plinth and three color options: Midnight Sky (black), Moon Ray (off-white), and Marantz Champagne.
The Grand Horizon features a captivating accent – a ring of 100 LEDs that illuminate upon approach and adjust volume with a touch. These elements elevate the speaker beyond a functional device, transforming it into a statement piece for your living space.
Connectivity and Features
The Horizon and Grand Horizon cater to diverse connection needs. They support Bluetooth 5.4, Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, and Spotify Connect, ensuring seamless integration with your preferred streaming services. Additionally, both models run on Denon's HEOS platform, allowing access to popular streaming options like Tidal, Spotify, Pandora, and Deezer, with high-resolution audio support. HEOS also enables multi-room audio setups or stereo pairing of two speakers in the same room.
Wired connectivity options include stereo RCA, optical TOSLINK, HDMI eARC (ideal for TV use), and a USB-C port for playback of MP3, AAC, and FLAC files from external drives.
Sound Performance
The Marantz sound signature shines through in both speakers. They deliver detailed, nuanced audio with a wide dynamic range. They can handle both delicate passages and powerful crescendos with precision and control.
Key Differences Between Horizon and Grand Horizon
The primary distinctions lie in size, power output, and driver configuration.
- Horizon:
- Smaller footprint (14.33" diameter)
- 310W amplifier (745W peak)
- Six drivers: 2 tweeters, 3 full-range drivers, 1 subwoofer (6.5")
- Grand Horizon:
- Larger footprint (19.41" diameter)
- 370W amplifier (860W peak)
- Eight drivers: 3 tweeters, 4 full-range drivers, 1 subwoofer (8")
The Grand Horizon's larger size and additional drivers translate to a more expansive soundstage and potentially better bass response.
Optional Accessories
- Marantz Horizon Tripod: A stylish, American walnut floor stand available for $700 (ideal for the Horizon model).
- Wall Mount Brackets: While not yet available, Marantz is currently developing wall mount solutions for both models.
Price and Availability
The Marantz Horizon carries a price tag of $3,500, while the Grand Horizon is priced at $5,500. Both models will be available for purchase starting January 14, 2025.
Conclusion
The Marantz Horizon and Grand Horizon are undeniably impressive wireless speakers, offering exceptional sound quality, luxurious design, and versatile connectivity options. However, their premium price tags may deter budget-conscious buyers. If money is no object and you seek a high-end, all-in-one audio solution with stunning aesthetics, the Grand Horizon is a compelling choice. However, for those willing to compromise slightly on soundstage and power, the Horizon offers a more affordable alternative while still delivering excellent audio performance. We look forward to the reviews and CE Critic score.
