Apple has officially unveiled the AirPods Pro 3, the third-generation of its flagship wireless earbuds. On paper, they look like a significant leap — improved Active Noise Cancellation, refined fit, new foam ear tips, built-in heart-rate tracking, and a futuristic Live Translation feature powered by Apple Intelligence.
But here’s the catch: when you strip away the fitness and AI extras, the AirPods Pro 3 don’t move the needle as much in driver design, chip architecture, or core sound performance. In fact, this feels more like an AirPods Pro 2.5 update than a true generational leap.
And with the AirPods Pro 2 already holding a 91% CE Critic Score and topping many “best earbuds” lists, the AirPods Pro 3 are entering a crowded market — and they have a lot to prove.
What’s New (and What’s Not)
Apple has framed the Pro 3 as the biggest update yet, but a closer look shows the story is more nuanced:
New Features
-
Heart-rate sensor for workouts and hearing health monitoring.
-
Live Translation for real-time multilingual conversations.
-
Improved ANC with foam ear tips and refined acoustic airflow.
-
Better fit and stability with 5 ear tip sizes, including XXS.
-
Up to 10 hours of battery life in Transparency mode.
Not Much Has Changed
-
Same driver design as the Pro 2, with no major tuning breakthroughs.
-
Same H2 chip — Apple didn’t debut a new silicon generation.
-
Charging case design is nearly identical.
-
Dropping cables and wall charger from the box.
In short, the Pro 3 are leaning heavily on health and AI features to justify the “3” branding.
AirPods Lineup: How They Stack Up
Apple’s wireless audio ecosystem is now spread across AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3. Here’s how they compare:
AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4
| Feature | AirPods 4 | AirPods Pro 2 | AirPods Pro 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch Year | 2024 | 2022 (USB-C update 2023) | 2025 |
| CE Critic Score | 82% | 91% | TBD |
| ANC | No | Yes | Improved, 2x Pro 2 |
| Transparency | Basic | Advanced | More natural, improved own-voice |
| Drivers | Custom Apple | Custom Apple | Same driver design |
| Chip | H2 | H2 | H2 (unchanged) |
| Heart Rate | No | No | Yes |
| Translation | No | No | Yes |
| Battery Life | 6 hrs | 6 hrs (ANC on) | 8 hrs ANC / 10 hrs Transparency |
| Water Resistance | IPX4 | IP54 | IP57 |
| Price | $129 | $249 | $249 |
| In the Box | Case + Cable | Case + Cable | Case only (no cable/charger) |
Takeaway: The Pro 3 adds smart features but keeps much of the Pro 2’s DNA intact.
Competing Against the Best
The wireless earbuds market has never been more competitive. Apple isn’t just fighting itself — it’s up against Bose, Sony, Samsung, and Google, all of whom have pushed their flagships to the limit.
Here’s how the AirPods Pro 3 stack up:
AirPods Pro 3 vs Competitors
| Feature | AirPods Pro 3 | Bose QC Ultra 2 | Google Pixel Buds Pro 3 | Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro 3 | Sony WF-1000XM5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CE Critic Score | TBD | 91% | TBD | TBD | 90% |
| ANC | Best yet (2x Pro 2) | Industry-leading, very natural | Solid, Google AI tuning | Improved over Buds 2 | Excellent, adaptive |
| Transparency | Enhanced own-voice | World-class Aware Mode | Strong, AI-powered | Standard | Natural, but less refined |
| Drivers | Custom Apple | Bose custom | Custom Google | Custom Samsung | 8.4mm Dynamic |
| Chipset | H2 (unchanged) | Qualcomm S7 | Google Tensor G3 | Samsung Exynos Audio | Sony Integrated V2 |
| Health Features | Heart-rate sensor, hearing protection | None | None | None | Limited |
| Translation | Live Translation | No | Google Translate app only | No | No |
| Battery Life | 8 hrs ANC / 10 hrs Transparency | 6 hrs | 7 hrs | 7 hrs | 8 hrs |
| Water Resistance | IP57 | IPX4 | IPX4 | IPX7 | IPX4 |
| Price | $249 | $299 | $199 | $229 | $299 |
Takeaway: Apple is betting big on health + AI translation to differentiate. But when it comes to sound and ANC alone, Bose and Sony remain major threats.
CE Critic Score Pressure
One of the biggest questions: Can the AirPods Pro 3 live up to the AirPods Pro 2’s 91% CE Critic Score?
-
The AirPods Pro 2 earned rave reviews for their balance of sound, ANC, ecosystem integration, and reliability.
-
The AirPods Pro 3 must prove that heart-rate tracking and translation aren’t just gimmicks, but genuine value-adds.
With Bose QC Ultra 2 also at 91% and Sony XM5 at 90%, Apple doesn’t have much margin for error.

Final Thoughts
The AirPods Pro 3 are Apple’s most feature-packed earbuds yet, but whether they truly deserve the “3” badge is up for debate.
If you care about fitness tracking and translation, these are a clear win. But if your focus is pure sound and noise cancellation, the upgrades over the Pro 2 are modest at best.
With Bose and Sony nipping at Apple’s heels, the AirPods Pro 3 enter the market with something to prove. This isn’t the seismic leap some expected — it’s more of a Pro 2.5 in disguise.
Still, in the Apple ecosystem, that might be enough to keep them on top.
