Meze Audio is expanding its in-ear monitor lineup with the introduction of the ASTRU, a new high-end single dynamic driver IEM designed for listeners who want flagship-level sound without entering four-figure territory. Priced at $899, the ASTRU represents Meze’s most ambitious single-driver in-ear monitor to date. Rather than following the industry trend toward increasingly complex multi-driver hybrids, Meze is taking a more focused approach: one carefully engineered dynamic driver designed to deliver the kind of coherence, imaging, and tonal richness usually associated with far more complicated designs. The new model will make its first public appearance at CanJam NYC this weekend, one of the world’s largest headphone and personal audio shows. Attendees will be able to hear the ASTRU ahead of its official retail release. According to Meze, the ASTRU will become available starting March 20, 2026 through mezeaudio.com, mezeaudio.eu, and selected retailers worldwide.
A Different Approach to High-End IEM Design
The high-end IEM market has increasingly become an arms race of driver counts. Some flagship models now pack a dozen drivers into a single earbud, combining balanced armatures, electrostatics, and dynamic drivers. Meze is intentionally moving in the opposite direction. With ASTRU, the Romanian audio company is betting on the strengths of a single dynamic driver design—a configuration prized by many audiophiles for its natural timbre and cohesive sound presentation. Instead of multiple drivers handling different parts of the frequency spectrum, a well-designed dynamic driver can reproduce the entire range with fewer crossover artifacts and a more organic presentation. That philosophy has long been part of Meze’s broader design language across its headphone lineup.
Advanced Multilayer Dynamic Driver
At the center of the ASTRU is a custom 10mm dynamic driver built using a multilayer composite diaphragm. The dome of the diaphragm is coated with more than 80 ultra-thin layers of gold, applied during a 48-hour physical vacuum DC magnetron sputtering process. This manufacturing technique allows extremely precise deposition of metallic layers while keeping the diaphragm lightweight. The gold-coated dome is then bonded to a titanium layer and mounted onto a PEEK (polyether ether ketone) base, a material known for its rigidity and resistance to resonance.
The goal of this structure is to balance three critical elements of dynamic driver performance:
-
Fast transient response
-
Smooth and extended treble
-
Full-bodied low-frequency impact
Dynamic drivers have long been celebrated for delivering physical bass response and natural tonality. Meze’s multilayer design aims to refine those strengths while improving speed and resolution.
Titanium Construction and Industrial Design
The ASTRU’s exterior reflects Meze’s long-standing focus on craftsmanship and materials. Each earphone shell is CNC-machined from a single block of pure titanium, then finished through a multi-stage electroplating process that produces a satin finish. According to Meze, the manufacturing process for each matched pair of shells can take up to seven days, highlighting the level of detail involved in the production process. The shell geometry has also been refined to improve comfort during extended listening sessions. Weight is kept relatively low for a titanium design, with the complete IEM weighing 13.4 grams.
Accessories and Connectivity
ASTRU ships as a fully equipped portable listening system.
The package includes a premium balanced cable featuring:
-
CNC-anodized aluminum hardware
-
Gold-plated 4.4mm balanced termination
-
Standard 2-pin connector
Balanced connections are increasingly common on high-end portable audio players because they offer improved channel separation and lower noise. Meze also includes a 4.4mm to 3.5mm adapter for compatibility with standard headphone outputs.
Additional accessories include:
-
Five sets of ear tips (XS to XL)
-
Protective carrying pouch
-
Soft PU leather storage envelope
The combination of accessories ensures the ASTRU can be used with everything from smartphone DAC dongles to dedicated portable audio players.

Where ASTRU Fits in Meze’s Lineup
Meze’s headphone lineup ranges from entry-level models to ultra-premium planar magnetic headphones costing several thousand dollars. Until now, the company’s in-ear monitor offerings were relatively limited.
The ASTRU now fills an important gap between entry-level IEMs and Meze’s flagship headphone products.
| Model | Type | Price | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| ALBA | IEM | $159 | Entry-level IEM |
| ASTRU | IEM | $899 | Premium IEM |
| 99 Classics (Gen 2) | Closed-back headphone | ~$309 | Audiophile starter |
| 109 PRO | Open-back headphone | ~$799 | Enthusiast tier |
| Liric II | Closed planar headphone | ~$2000+ | High-end portable |
| Empyrean II | Planar flagship headphone | ~$3000+ | Flagship |
With ASTRU, Meze now offers a serious audiophile-grade in-ear monitor designed for listeners who want high-end performance in a portable format.
A Promising Addition for Personal Audio Fans
The high-end IEM market is crowded with complex multi-driver designs from companies like 64 Audio, Campfire Audio, and Noble Audio. Meze’s strategy with ASTRU is refreshingly straightforward: build a single dynamic driver IEM using premium materials and careful acoustic tuning rather than chasing driver counts. Whether that approach resonates with listeners will ultimately depend on how the ASTRU performs in real-world listening. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long to find out. With CanJam NYC serving as the first public demo and retail availability arriving on March 20, audiophiles will soon have the opportunity to hear what Meze’s latest creation can do.
